About the Gloucester Rotary Club

The Gloucester Rotary Club was chartered by Rotary International and sponsored by The Richmond Rotary Club, in 1962. We are under the jurisdiction of Rotary District 7610, which consists of 56 clubs and over 2060 members in Mid- to Northeast Virginia. Early in our Club’s history, as interest in Rotary grew, the Club also sponsored the formation of the Gloucester Point and Mathews Clubs. In Summer 2022, Gloucester Rotary and Gloucester Point Rotary merged to form one club. The Matthews Club also remains active and often partners with the Gloucester Rotary on events and projects.

Our priorities align of that with Rotary, and can be divided into seven categories:
  • Promoting peace
  • Fighting disease
  • Providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Saving mothers and children
  • Supporting education
  • Growing local economies
  • Protecting the environment

Our Work

Since our charter, we have provided financial and service-based support for a wide range of local initiatives, including: polio immunizations, building and maintaining local hospitals and clinics, funding youth scholarships, and participating in clean ups and place-making initiatives throughout the county. We’ve also supported international initiatives such as: PolioPlus, and Bridges to Prosperity, organized by a former Gloucester Rotarian to fund and build footbridges in remote areas of developing countries.

Past projects include:
  • Building a picnic shelter at Beaverdam Park;

  • Providing annual scholarships for Gloucester High School graduates;

  • Conceiving/furnishing a cultural center in the historic Botetourt Hotel (now the Gloucester Museum of History);

  • Supporting the work of local organizations, including the: Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Bread for Life Food Pantry, Peasley Middle School,  Gloucester Samaritans, Baystars, Gloucester Mathews Care Clinic, Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
